This week we continue our summer series “One Giant Leap” exploring the golden age of spaceflight, when mankind took the first steps toward the stars.
The X-15 was used to study atmospheric rocketry and pave the way for the Mercury program, which for the first time took US astronauts into space. We’ll explore the design of the X-15 and its role in shaping the design of the Mercury hardware and operations. Additionally we’ll focus on key Mercury missions and highlight some of the ingenious engineering that paved the way for its successor, Apollo.
Note: No program next week, happy Juneteenth!
Cosmic Conversations is presented by the Standley Lake Library and Standley Lake Stargazing. All summer long, Cosmic Conversations cover a wide range of topics related to spaceflight and astronomy. Additionally Standley Lake Stargazing independently hosts live-streamed educational programs Thursdays throughout the year.
